Limiting Youth Access to Tobacco
NSTCP help limit Youth Access to tobacco by conducting
compliance checks to merchants who sell tobacco products. NSTCP
offers merchant education to any merchant with a permit to sell
tobacco products regarding appropriate signage, identification
requirements, and assistance in understanding local and state
law.
According to State Law in Massachusetts:
- It is illegal to sell tobacco products to any person under
the age of 18 (MGL Ch.270
6).
- It is illegal for anyone, except a parent or guardian,
to give a tobacco product to an individual under the age of 18.
- · Any retailer that sells the tobacco products
must post the yellow Massachusetts state sign stating that it
is illegal to sell tobacco products to any person under the age
of 18 (MGL Ch.270
7).
Secondhand Smoke/Environmental Tobacco
Smoke-ETS
Environmental Tobacco Smoke or Secondhand Smoke is a dilute
mixture of "mainstream" smoke exhaled by smokers and
"sidestream" smoke from the lit end of a tobacco product
(CAL. EPA, 1997).
Environmental tobacco Smoke (second-hand smoke) contains
the same carcinogenic compounds as the smoke inhaled by smokers
(CAL. EPA, 1997;U.S. HHS, 1986). |
